Admiral is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. In 1981, it was renovated into 37 affordable apartments under Oregon Housing and Community Services’ Elderly and Disabled Bond Program and given a 30 year Section 8 rental subsidy contract.
The building has undergone an extensive renovation that has modernized the building’s systems while retaining and restoring its historic character.
Admiral is in the heart of Downtown Portland. In 2008, Admiral was at risk of losing its affordability due to the upcoming expiration of the Section 8 contract and increased demand for housing in the city core. REACH CDC purchased Admiral, using multiple funding sources, to preserve the housing for the residents – several of whom had lived in the building for over 20 years. The Section 8 contract was renewed by HUD for 20 years in 2010.
