Des Moines Field Office Staff Volunteer at Homeless Shelter

Near the end of each calendar year, staff with the Des Moines Field Office is provided multiple opportunities to share with the community.  This includes the all-important Combined Federal Campaign as well as food collections etc.  In an effort to create a Team Building activity, the Des Moines Office of Field Policy and Management staff determined the local homeless/transitional shelter could use some assistance in the middle of the year.

The Central Iowa Shelter and Services is a homeless shelter consisting of 150 emergency beds, 38 Section 8 efficiency apartments, and 19 apartments for veterans.  In addition to the sleeping quarters, the facility includes a computer lab, food pantry, clothing closet, large dayroom, commercial kitchen, healthcare clinic, and an open backyard area

Every day, every meal served to individuals at the shelter are prepared and served by volunteers. Therefore, the mid-year activity involved a group of field office volunteers to plan, prepare and serve dinner to approximately 250 visitors to the shelter.
