Des Moines Field Office Staff Volunteer at Homeless Shelter
Near the end of each calendar year, staff with the Des Moines Field Office is provided multiple opportunities to share with the community. This includes the all-important Combined Federal Campaign as well as food collections etc. In an effort to create a Team Building activity, the Des Moines Office of Field Policy and Management staff determined the local homeless/transitional shelter could use some assistance in the middle of the year.
The Central Iowa Shelter and Services is a homeless shelter consisting of 150 emergency beds, 38 Section 8 efficiency apartments, and 19 apartments for veterans. In addition to the sleeping quarters, the facility includes a computer lab, food pantry, clothing closet, large dayroom, commercial kitchen, healthcare clinic, and an open backyard area
Every day, every meal served to individuals at the shelter are prepared and served by volunteers. Therefore, the mid-year activity involved a group of field office volunteers to plan, prepare and serve dinner to approximately 250 visitors to the shelter.

On May 23, 2013, twelve employees of the Des Moines Field Office successfully completed the planning, preparation and serving an evening meal to over 250 men and women at Central Iowa Shelter and Services. The meal consisted of: ham, potatoes, corn, roll, cookie, and ice cream.
This cross-program collaboration included the following individuals and their offices: Steve Eggleston, Field Policy and Management; Aliza Reisberg ,Field Policy and Management; Julie Sleeper, Field Policy and Management; James Ryan, Multifamily; Michael Sexton, Multifamily; Lynette Shrum, Multifamily; Tangela Weiss, Multifamily; Pamela Dodge, Multifamily; Cecilia Diaz-Johnson, Multifamily; Sang-ki Han, Office of General Counsel; Margol Wilhelmson, Financial Management Center; and Kathy Ritzler, Public and Indian Housing.
Local Union AFGE 3452 donated $100 towards the purchase of the food. The remainder was provided by the Field Office Director.
