HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan visited New York City on January 15 to attend the "Safe Streets, Strong Communities" forum at the Ford Foundation in mid-Manhattan sponsored by the MetLife Foundation. The event, hosted by the
Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and the Police Foundation, examined how collaborations between community groups and law enforcement are working to reduce crime and stabilize neighborhoods in some of America's most
distressed communities. Panelists discussed strategies for LISC's signature approach, detailing how local collaborations have replaced crime "hot spots" with quality housing, active businesses, and safe spaces for families. The
Secretary, who was joined by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, discussed the role of the Administration's "Ladders of Opportunity" that incorporates HUD's Promise Zone initiative, "Strong Cities, Strong Communities" program, and
Public Housing's Choice Neighborhoods program. The event drew some of the nation's leading advocates for policing and neighborhood revitalization.
